We left Kaiteriteri at 9.00am. Woke up to a sunny morning and were thinking today would have been a better day to drive over the Takaka Hill. Much clearer for the views. But that’s the way it is. We started off heading for Cable Bay ( the enclosed bay above the 2min sign on the map above) for the night but when we got there the sun had disappeared and there was just a bay and the camp ground and nothing else. We did know that it would be very quiet and peaceful but not quite this quiet. We decided we wouldn’t stay and move onto a the next place we wanted to check out, called Okiwi Bay (the destination red spot on the map). Really nice drive through the valleys, and over the hills. We went really quite high but unfortunately no opportunities to get any photos too many trees blocking it. I might have seen a couple of small openings but on these narrow windy roads I can’t quickly say stop when I see an opening. Therefore missed them. I could see a glimpse to know the views were really nice looking down to the bay. We have to go back the same way to the main highway so might try and stop then..

We drove through Motueka again after leaving Kaiteriteri and picked up on a few supplies.
Just out of town we stopped and made a coffee.
We have now arrived at Cable Bay where we were going to stay the night but as you can see nothing much there. So we moved on. Above and below photos taken looking both ways of the bay. As you can see since we have driven through Nelson the weather has clouded over and we have lost that beautiful sunny morning.
As we left the bay, looking back. This end of the bay is a tidal estuary whereas the bay we took the photos from is that stretch of sand running across the water with the open sea behind that in the distance. Bit hard to explain. The sea runs in and out through an opening to the right of the bar.
We are now climbing over the hills on the main highway 6 in the direction to Havelock. Photos above and below.
Lots of tree feeling all the way over these hills.
Above and below, we have now left highway 6 and heading out to Okiwi Bay just before we climb another range of hills.
Over the top of the hills before descending down to the bay. Very high. You can just see a peek of the bay. Tried to get more photos as we got nearer but there were no gapes between the trees. Might try and add some when we come back on the way to Havelock.
Closer now just above Okiwi Bay looking down.
Checked into our camp site and walked across the road to the beach. More built up than Cable Bay a small settlement at
the end of the beach, close up photo below.
Looking back towards the other end.
This shows the whole bay how enclosed it is with a small entrance going out into Tasman Bay.
When we checked in, the lady in the office was telling us about the fresh oysters that had just arrived. They are fresh and were gathered not far from this bay. And look at the size of them. That’s a sandwich plate they are sitting on. They were so sweet. Nicest ones I have ever tasted and the biggest at approximately 75mm. Yum..We had three each before dinner which were like a meal and will finish the rest tomorrow.
Also forgot to say we stopped at a big fish shop on the shores of Nelson and bought a couple of scallop pies for lunch but as they had been frozen we decided to keep them for lunch tomorrow.
The weather wasn’t the best for the rest of the day after our beautiful sunny morning. Very cloudy but only a few spots of rain on the windows. It’s looking much the same for several days. We wanted to continue out to French Pass tomorrow but if the weather is looking doubtful we might not go that far we will decide in the morning.
